Cancel or Stop AutoCAD Subscription Renewal

Stopping an AutoCAD subscription (or AutoCAD LT) is not the same job as picking a cheaper tool. It is account hygiene: Turn off the next charge, keep access until the term ends, and decide who still needs an author seat after that.

What “cancel” usually means

Autodesk’s public account help describes two ways to stop the next renewal while you keep using the product until the current term ends:

1. Turn off auto-renew in Autodesk Account.
2. Cancel at renewal (records that you will not renew; you can undo during the shutoff window).

Neither is an instant mid-term shutdown for a normal annual plan. You pay for the term you already bought. You stop the automatic next invoice.

If the subscription is not renewed, Autodesk describes a shutoff sequence after expiry: expired → suspended → canceled. During early shutoff stages you can often still renew. After full cancel, you typically buy a new subscription rather than “restarting” the old one.

Steps in Autodesk Account (direct purchase)

Exact labels move around, but the public flow is stable:

1. Sign in as the purchaser (or someone with billing rights) at your Autodesk Account.
2. Open Billing and orders → Subscriptions and contracts.
3. Select the AutoCAD / AutoCAD LT product.
4. Either turn Auto-Renew Off, or use Cancel subscription at renewal and confirm a reason.

Do this before the renewal date. Waiting until the charge hits is how idle seats become another year of cost.

Reseller purchases

Many contractor firms buy through an authorized partner. In that case:

• The partner may own renewal quotes and invoices.
• Account toggles alone may not stop the charge.
• Ask the partner in writing to confirm auto-renew is off and which seats end on which date.

Treat “we clicked cancel in the portal” as incomplete until the partner confirms.

Contractor checklist before seats end

1. List named users who opened and saved DWG in the last 90 days.

4. Export or archive active project folders while seats still work.
5. Calendar the expiry date so plot day does not land in suspended status.

Common traps

• Idle seats nobody reviews before the renewal email.
• Assuming education or trial covers commercial work after you cancel (it does not).
• Canceling every seat when one or two full-time drafters still need desktop LT or a peer.

To stop AutoCAD from renewing: Turn off auto-renew or cancel at renewal in Autodesk Account (or through your reseller) before the term ends. Keep access until expiry, then run shutoff. Count authors before you cut seats, give readers a viewer, and put light editors on a path that does not require a heavy install on every machine.
